Kiddie Ride

Skeeter went back to Maui.  This time with Alaska Airlines and scooter transport was as equally non-eventful as it was in November with Hawaiian Airlines.  Love those airlines...

It was so nice being outside in warm weather rather than in 20 lbs. of clothes.  Earl took me out on my daily scoots--sometimes walking, sometimes biking.  Heidi, Michael, Sarah and Kyle joined us for a winter getaway and it wasn't until we went to Lahaina that I discovered Skeeter had potential as a kiddie ride.

Downtown Lahaina
Lahaina Town is the ultimate tourist trap (crowds, the landmark Banyan tree, t-shirt shops aplenty), but it's still fun.  I had been nervous about the crowds, narrow sidewalks and varied terrain, but it's pretty ADA compliant and Skeeter could manuever most everywhere.  While waiting for Earl and Michael under the banyan tree, Kyle looks at me and asks the dreaded question we knew was coming.  "Gigi, can I ride on your Scooter?"

Banyan Tree
Heidi, a safety-conscious parent, had seen that I could stop promptly, control my speed, hadn't fallen off Skeeter and hadn't hit a tourist; so she relented.  She also wasn't in the mood for an argument.  So Kyle climbed on, occupied the small spot in front of me and off we went--around and around the banyan tree paths.  Two times around and Sarah had had it with being mature and patient.  "My turn!", shoving Kyle off and taking his place.  Again, off we went--around and around.  It's amazing how little it takes to entertain grandchildren and grandmothers.

Up, up and away!
Kyle's five year old walking legs gave out (big surprise), so he rode with me to the other end of town where we found another place suitable for kiddie rides.  The Lahaina Center Mall was quiet and had a big, empty parking lot with a (gasp) ramp.  The ramp was steep, but short and Skeeter made it up with the help of Little Einsteins' clapping (inside joke).  At the top–not a car, parent, or ledge in sight so it became the perfect place for children to play steer.  We took that route..oh, about 20 times!  I'll never feel the same about grandchildrenless Lahaina.

  1. It is those special moments - the simple, unencumbered connections that are so perfect!
Can't buy or create those - they just happen!
    Cool!
